Why an AC freezes up
Ice on an air-conditioning system is a warning sign, not extra cooling. Restricted airflow, a dirty filter, a blower problem, or a refrigerant-related issue may be involved. Turn the cooling off, avoid chipping at the ice, and call for diagnosis. Continuing to run a frozen system can make the problem worse.
